How Durable Is Moissanite? The Facts on Hardness and Everyday Wear

Durability questions about moissanite usually start with one number. Diamond rates 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. Moissanite rates about 9.25. That gap is real, and so is the conclusion most buyers draw from it: moissanite is one of the hardest gemstones used in jewelry and durable enough for everyday wear with proper care. The number still leaves out half the story, because hardness measures scratch resistance and nothing else, and the stone is rarely the part of a piece that gives out first.

Miami The Jeweler, the downtown Miami shop founded by first-generation jeweler Samuel Madrid, sets VVS1, D-color moissanite in 925 sterling silver and natural and lab-grown diamonds in solid gold. The shop’s view of durability covers the whole piece, from the stone to the clasp.

What the Mohs scale measures

The Mohs scale ranks minerals by scratch resistance: a harder material scratches a softer one. It is an ordinal scale, meaning it puts materials in order without measuring equal steps between them. The jump from 9 to 10 is far larger in absolute hardness than the jump from 8 to 9.

For context, corundum, the mineral behind sapphire and ruby, rates 9. Quartz rates 7, and quartz particles are a common part of household dust. Gemstones softer than 7 can pick up fine scratches over years of wear from that dust alone. At about 9.25, moissanite sits well above that threshold and above corundum, which helps it keep a crisp polish under daily wear.

Hardness is not the same as toughness

Scratch resistance and resistance to chipping or breaking are different properties. Hardness describes how a surface holds up to abrasion. Toughness describes how a material handles a sharp blow. A gemstone can be very hard and still chip if it takes a knock at the wrong angle, usually at a thin edge or a facet junction. Diamond, despite its rating of 10, can chip this way too.

No gemstone is indestructible, and moissanite is no exception. The practical takeaway is that moissanite resists everyday scratching very well, and like any gem it deserves some care around hard impacts.

The metal is usually the weak point

Sterling silver and gold are both far softer than moissanite. In a finished piece, the metal takes the wear first. Prongs can bend after repeated knocks against desks and door frames. Links can stretch or wear at their contact points. Plating on yellow-finish pieces, such as MTJ’s 18K gold-plated 925 sterling silver, can thin with friction, chemicals and skin contact. Sterling silver can also tarnish over time.

That shifts the durability question from the stone to the construction. A secure setting keeps a stone in place through years of wear. A well-built clasp keeps the whole piece on the wearer. MTJ treats both as core parts of quality, along with substantial construction, appropriate weight and precise setting with small, clean prongs that hold each stone securely.

The shop’s quality rule applies before a piece ever reaches a customer. If a finished piece does not meet the top standard, the team melts it down and starts over. Madrid sums up the reasoning: “Everything we do has to be perfect, otherwise it’s not ready for our customers.”

Everyday wear habits that help

A few habits protect both stone and metal. Take off rings and bracelets for the gym, heavy lifting, sports and yard work, where hard impacts are most likely. Remove jewelry before swimming, hot tubs and household cleaning, since chlorine and harsh chemicals are hard on silver and plating.

Storage matters too. Harder materials scratch softer ones, so a diamond can scratch moissanite and moissanite can scratch softer gems and metal surfaces. Store pieces separately in soft pouches or lined compartments rather than loose in a drawer.

Clean pieces regularly with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush so buildup does not dull the stones, and have a jeweler check prongs and clasps if anything snags, rattles or looks out of line.

Choosing for the way you wear jewelry

Moissanite’s hardness makes it a sound choice for pieces worn every day, including stone-heavy chains and bracelets that would cost far more to build in natural diamonds and solid gold. Buyers who value diamond’s rarity, tradition and material value have that option too, and its hardness of 10 suits daily wear just as well. MTJ sells both and represents each as exactly what it is, so the decision comes down to what the buyer values.

In either category, the durability of the jewelry depends on how well it was built. Readers can see the construction up close at the shop’s showroom, 22 NE First St, Suite 225, in downtown Miami, or browse MTJ’s chains, bracelets and rings online.
